Through the thorough investigation of the physiological function and characteristics of the liver in traditional Chinese medicine, Professor Wang Qingqi proposes that the liver is the “source of regulation” of the body. There are three reasons for this point of view. First of all, the liver is the most important one of the five zang-organs. Secondly, the liver belongs to shaoyang, which is the pivot of the body, so it can adjust the eyes, urethral orifice, seminiferous duct and anal orifice. Thirdly, the liver belongs to wood, which is born in water and can born fire, so it can adjust rise and fall of yingyang and water fire of the body. The connotation of the “source of regulation” includes regulating such physiological function as qi and blood circulation, emotion, bile secretion, water and liquid metabolism, defecation, reproduction, sleep, and muscle and bone movement.
