This paper reviews the research progress on inhibiting cardiomyocyte apoptosis by intervention of the mitochondrial pathway with traditional Chinese medicine. Mitochondrial pathway, as a key link in apoptosis, inhibits cardiomyocyte apoptosis by reducing mitochondrial injury, thereby protecting ischemic myocardium. The mitochondrial pathway can be interfered by the monomer of traditional Chinese medicine (saffron acid, resveratrol, etc.) and the traditional Chinese medicine compounds (Jianpi huatan quyu recipe, Gualou xiebai baijiu decoction etc.). In addition to regulating some classical molecules in the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, it also involves activation of the ROS-mitochondrial pathway, and the mechanism is mostly related to the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and its downstream molecules including eNOS, GSK-3β and FoxO3a.
