Through analyzing the consensuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with both Chinese and Western medicine and related literature,and taking personal experience into consideration,the author discusses the management of GERD with Chinese medicine in the following four aspects,i.e. syndrome differentiation or disease differentiation,grasping the chief symptom or the main disease,treating the tip or the root; and treating with medication or non-medical approaches. It is suggested that the diagnosis and treatment of the disease should be guided by the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and the principle of seeking the root of the disease,adhering to the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine,syndrome differentiation and disease differentiation,and first grasping the main disease and then the main symptoms.
