This paper made an analysis on the trichosanthes-oyster couplet medicines from three parts as clearing heat and promoting fluid production,promoting urination,softening and resolving hard mass. Clearing heat and promoting fluid production is chiefly used in hyperthyroidism,menopausal syndrome,type II diabetes mellitus and those identified as syndrome of hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency in Chinese medicine. Promoting urination,which means inducing diuresis without impairment of yin,is generally used in ascites due to liver cirrhosis in decompensated status,edema and those identified as syndrome of asthenia in origin and pathogenic factors in superficiality in Chinese medicine. Softening and resolving hard mass is mainly used in thyromegaly,tumor and those identified as syndrome of hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency and turbidity and accumulation of phlegm in Chinese medicine.
