Cao Yi's experience in treating stress urinary incontinence with acupuncture
This paper presents Professor Cao Yi's clinical experience in treating stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with acupuncture. Professor Cao emphasizes that the pathogenesis of SUI primarily stems from "deficiency" of the spleen, liver, and kidney, along with dysfunction of the Ren and Du meridians. Specifically, spleen deficiency leads to weak restraint, liver deficiency disrupts relaxation and contraction of sinews, kidney deficiency weakens the ability to control fluids, and disharmony of Ren and Du Meridians causes insufficient nourishment of internal viscera. In treatment, Professor Cao focuses on "regulation": selecting specific acupoints to harmonize viscera, using deep needling at bilateral Mu points to regulate fu-organs, and ingeniously applying the method of regulating Du and Ren Meridians to restore meridian balance. She also emphasizes "nourishment": nourishing qi by activating upper body while consolidating lower body, nurturing the liver by regulating liver qi, and fostering muscle by invigorating the spleen. Techniques including long-needle deep needling, acupuncture manipulation, and electro-acupuncture are applied synergistically to promote qi circulation, unblock qi stagnation and gather qi. Other therapies like moxibustion and functional exercises are used to warm yang, tonify deficiency, and strengthen meridian restraint, ultimately aiming to stabilize urine flow, enhance urinary control, and stop enuresis.
