Tang Qiang's experience in treating post‑stroke depression with "nourishing spirit and unblocking fu‑organs" acupuncture method
This article summarizes Professor Tang Qiang's clinical experience in treating post-stroke depression (PSD) using the "Yangshen Tongfu" (nourishing spirit and unblocking fu-organs) acupuncture method. Professor Tang proposes that deficiency caused by blood stasis is the pathogenecal basis of PSD, gallbladder deficiency with impaired pivot function is the key mechasnism to the onset of PSD, and the stasis-deficiency-depression sequence represents the disease progression of PSD. Accordingly, the acupuncture protocol is centered on the gallbladder meridian of foot-shaoyang, with needle insertion at the equidistant quartile points along the line connecting Fengchi (GB20) and Jianjing (GB21) on both sides. The therapeutic aims are to ascend the gallbladder qi and nourish the spirit, unblock the fu organs and resolve stasis, and balance clearing and nourishing. Emphasis is also placed on combining acupuncture and rehabilitation and integrating traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine to enhance patients' treatment compliance, thereby facilitating early functional recovery and long-term rehabilitation. A clinical case is presented for reference.
