Study on regulatory effect of nourishing liver and kidneys method on endoplasmic reticulum stress in knee osteoarthritis based on theory of "liver and kidneys sharing same source"
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic bone and joint disease. Excessive and prolonged endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress can lead to chondrocyte apoptosis. Targeting ER stress may delay the progression of KOA. According to the theory of "liver and kidneys sharing the same source", both organs derive from reproductive essence and are closely related physiologically and pathologically. The liver governs tendons, while the kidneys govern bones, making deficiency of liver and kidneys a critical pathogenesis of KOA. The functions of the liver and kidneys (from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective) show similarities to ER function. Traditional Chinese herbal medicines that nourish the liver and kidneys can modulate key pathways involved in ER stress, interfering with the synthesis of critical substances, thereby reducing the incidence of ER stress and ultimately delaying the progression of KOA.
