Traditional Chinese medicine treatment for Alzheimer’s disease based on the microbiota⁃brain⁃gut axis
The nervous system and the gastrointestinal system are closely connected physiologically and pathologically. The proposed theory of brain-gut axis further confirms the strong correlation between the brain and the gastrointestinal system. An increasing number of studies has indicated that gut microbiota can influence the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease by acting on the brain-gut axis. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the microbiota-brain-gut axis, we propose the approach of treating the brain from the intestine, and discuss the strategy of applying TCM (including traditional Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion) to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in order to provide reference for clinical TCM treatment.
