Treatment strategies and experience of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine for severe COVID⁃19 patients in Shanghai
Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 has the characteristics of rapid transmission, insidiousness, and relatively decreased virulence. Most infected patients have relatively mild clinical symptoms, but a certain proportion of elderly people with underlying diseases still turn into severe or critical cases. Since the spring of 2022, community and cluster transmission of COVID-19 have coexisted in Shanghai, and a high proportion of severe cases are those elderly with underlying diseases. Therefore, the key to reducing the mortality rate of COVID-19 lies in the effective treatment of severe cases. To treat and cure severe cases, Shanghai has established a “multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment” model, insisting on the integrated application of traditional Chinese and western medicine, and emphasizing early intervention, syndrome differentiation-based treatment, one-person-one-policy, one-person-one-prescription, and preemptive treatment for disease interception, for the purpose of effective disease progression control and decrease in mortality rate. The article summarizes Shanghai’s diagnosis and treatment model and experience in treating severe COVID-19 patients and tries to improve the technical system of traditional Chinese medicine in treating severe COVID-19 cases.
