Progress and prospect on effect mechanism study of acupuncture and moxibustion based on metabolomics technology
Metabolomics is an emerging discipline that analyzes all low molecular weight metabolites (organic and inorganic metabolites with relative molecular mass below 1,000 as the research core) of a certain organism or cell, and is a scientific method that reveals the metabolic essence of the organism’s life activities through the study of metabolites. Science of acupuncture and moxibustion, as an important part of traditional Chinese medicine, follows the principle of holistic concept and syndrome differentiation based treatment. The multi-level and multi-target characteristics of acupuncture effect are highly consistent with the integrity and systematicness of metabolomics, which has a broad application prospect in the effect mechanism study of acupuncture and moxibustion. At present, there are both opportunities and challenges for the development of acupuncture and moxibustion in the process of international standardization. The application of metabolomics technology to elucidate the scientific connotation of effect mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion in a comprehensive and systematic manner is of great significance for the modernization of acupuncture and moxibustion, and the use of metabolomics technology may also provide important technical support for the objective and scientific explanation of the effect mechanism.
