This paper analyzes the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux related asthma from the perspective of literature about both Chinese and Western medicine, and discusses the strategy for treating this disease with Chinese medicine. As regards pathogenesis, there are mainly reflux stimulation theory, nerve reflex theory and neuropeptide stimulation theory. It is believed that “asthma” is only the consequence, and that the retrograde movement of gastric and duodenal contents along the esophagus is the fundamental reason. In the treatment of this condition, Chinese medicine should focus on fortifying the spleen and harmonizing the stomach, in order to treat the stomach to calm the lung and relieve asthma without treating asthma. At the same time, attention should be paid to avoiding mistaken identification of the location and nature of the disease.
