There are 23 prescriptions with white paeony root and Chinese yam used together to cure 8 groups of diseases in Records of Tradition Chinese and Western Medicine in Combination by Zhang Xichun. White paeony root and Chinese yam together have interdependence between ascending and descending, and adjust yin and yang to stop convulsions, which can cure consumptive diseases and cholera; this two herbs, with one divergent and the other astringent combined together, as well as storage and excretion together, stop asthma and diarrhea, which can cure dyspnea syndrome and diarrhea;this two herbs treat deficiency and excess, cause and symptoms simultaneously to stop bleeding and regulate menstruation, which can cure vomiting and bleeding, amenorrhea and aberratio mensium; this two herbs nourish and purge simultaneously and replenish water and fall the fire at the same time to treat dysentery and stop urination pain, which can cure painful urination and dysentery. Zhang Xichun’s treatment based on syndrome differentiation and his rule of prescription are analyzed based on the theory and his 23 prescriptions to guide the clinical practice.
