When treating the disease, Professor Yan Dexin would distinguish whether it was a new disease or a chronic one, a deficiency syndrome or an excess one, and chose prescriptions attached importance to regulating qi, promoting blood circulation and tranquilizing the mind. The basic treatment principle for excess syndrome was to soothe the liver and regulate qi, calm the heart and tranquilize the spirit, and the modified prescriptions with Chaihu(Radix Bupleuri) were often used. For deficiency syndrome, the principle was to strengthen the spleen and replenish qi, nourish blood and tranquilize the spirit, and the prescriptions were mainly the modified Guipi Decoction or Suanzaoren Decoction. With the development of the disease and changes of pathogenesis, some effective medicines were added into the prescriptions for regulating the functions of zang-fu organs and removing pathological products such as phlegm-fire and blood stasis. In addition, He was good at the application of synergistic couplet medicines and powerful tranquilizers, especially at the application of Huanglian(Rhizoma Coptidis) with unique characteristics.
